They Write the Right Stuff. Each year more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. Students were encouraged to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on the patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief: WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT.
The Patriot’s Pen Contest offers an opportunity for middle school students to express their views on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is “America’s Gift to My Generation.” Open to sixth, seventh and eighth grades, last year more than 120,000 students participated in the Patriot’s Pen.
Winners from two contests were announced: the Patriot’s Pen, an essay contest for students in grades six, seven and eight, and the Voice of Democracy award based on audio essays from area high.
